Process
We started off with absolutely no artefact in mind. We were quite split in our decision making and there were so many ideas floating around that we could not decide what to do. We wanted to just start off with our mood tracking in the form of a simple excel sheet, do some journaling then go on from there.
In the proposal stage, we did mention that we wanted to do a calendar at the end of the project. But as we went by and doing more experimentation, we drifted from that idea.
We were so undecided on our final artefact...
We looked a lot at what other designers are doing and at that point, we were just experimenting to see what works and how we can bring that forward into a greater idea.
Because our project did not work with actual numbers, we had to figure out a way to visualise our data. We already knew we wanted to work with colors as a way to represent different feelings, we decided that we each create our own gradients to express the transition between the mood in the day the night. We used our own choice of color to represent different things and played with textures to add our own creative input.
We displayed our gradients into a few different layouts. First, we did strips of our gradients and put the 21 days worth of strips together on an A3 poster. The second one was laying our gradients out into 21 columns like a calendar and lastly a little flipbook that honestly did not work very well.
At this point in time, we were already nearing the presentation stage at week 14 and we have yet to even produce a final artefact that we were sure of. At this point, we brainstormed again to try to look at other different things we could do. This time, we wanted to create something with more physical presence. We came up with 3 other artefacts namely, a video and publication and a physical artefact.
The 3 artefacts
The video's rationale was to show the change in time and the transition of our mood throughout the day.
The second artefact was the physical artefact was to show the flow of our moods throughout the day. We wanted something that the audience could feel and touch as well as an artefact with physical presence. We felt that we needed something to draw others in as well.
The third artefact was the publication where our gradients are collated into a square book measuring 180mm by 180mm. We wanted a book that showcases all of the gradients we have put together and experimented on. Our publication was inspired by a book called The Power of Color by Sulki and Min
After our presentation, we felt that the series of our artefacts really does not work and they were not of a substantial quality. After some thinking and discussion, we decided to combine what we had into a single publication. So we scratched the idea of a physical artefact and the video and decided to make a publication instead. This would save us a lot of time since we would be working off of what we already have and we were working with just one artefact this time, which leads us to our outcome.
